I could only see disaster in this. Either the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica, or the aftermath of a nuclear explosion. I felt the ozone layer vision was less terrifying, although maybe not.

I agree the ozone hole is a better interpretation, but the nuclear blast does assert itself, no matter how I try to make it a breast or portal or...I know, got it...!
